Our church was founded in 1961, when Pastor Ken Rowlands
opened the fellowship with just a small number of people gathering
in the Constitutional Hall in Cross Street, Wigston. The church
at that time was called the "Wigston Assemblies of God Church".
As the church became more well known in the area, the membership
grew and in 1968 new purpose built premises were opened in Central
Avenue, Wigston. These were extended in 1977.
In 1988, the Methodist
Church in Frederick Street joined with the Methodist Church in Moat
Street, and the Moat Street premises were then used as their place
of worship. The Frederick Street building was consequently purchased
by our church to accommodate the growing congregation. It was at
this point that the church changed its name to the "Wigston Central
Pentecostal Church".
To commemorate the move, a March of Witness
took place from Central Avenue to Frederick Street. The opening
service was led by Pastor Ken Rowlands, and Keith Monument, the
Assemblies of God Home Missions Secretary, preached. The service
was attended by the mayor of Oadby and Wigston.
In 1990, Pastor
Ken Rowlands retired after 30 years service. Pastor John Parker
took over as Senior Pastor, successfully leading the work on for the
next 15 years.
Our present Pastors, Phil and Mary Buckley took on the work in
September 2006.
Today, with an adult membership of 150
together with a thriving work with children, young people and senior
citizens, the church continues its tradition of sharing the Christian
message with the people of Wigston and surrounding areas.
