The Glory of His Name

Judges 13:15-23

What an encounter the parents of Samson had with the Lord described in this passage!

Manoah was wanting to find out the name of this mighty angel who had visited them. The Angel of the Lord said, “Why do you ask me my name seeing it is wonderful!”

The Lord brings the most amazing revelations in scripture at the most surprising times. At the burning bush He speaks of His Name “I am that I am !” Outside Jericho Jesus appears to Joshua as the Captain of the Army of the Lord. In Isaiah, the wonder of Jesus is described in greater detail. His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor. Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

It was said of the soldiers of Napoleon that they were content to die in the ditch if only he rode over them to victory. With their last breath they cried, “Long live the Emperor!” It seemed as though they had no regard for their own interests so long as glory was given to his name.

So should it be of us. Higher than our own comfort, or success or popularity should be the one thought of the glory of that name which is above all other names. When Samson's parents saw the angel they fell down in wonder – they thought they would die because they had seen the Lord. The opposite was the truth. Let us tell the world the message of our wonderful Lord!

The film Passion of the Christ had massive box office success – the jury is out on its long-term effect for God and the honour it brings to His Name. My RE Teacher at school became a Christian through seeing the film The Robe . Our prayer must be that people find God through this film even though we are right to have reservations about its violence and RC overtones. We can be grateful that it is not a mockery of Christ's passion but serious in its intentions to present the reality of His sufferings.
